This paper argues that farmers play a leading role in the determination of the institutional foundations of America's political economy. The author suggests that the rules and regulations governing US securities markets were created in opposition to the wishes of business owners. Moreover, to the extent that US securities regulations serve as a template for international standards, the paper will show that the humble US framer has inadvertently contributed to the financialization of the modern global economy.
