This paper looks at how US power may evolve from 2010 to 2040. In order to do this, the author summarizes the epochs of US power (establishing the nation, achieving world hegemony, building an Empire, struggling with multipolarity and attempts to maintain hegemony) and draws analogies from the study of historical empires and contemporary political economy. He then examines China's long-term abilities to challenge the US and achieve world hegemony before forecasting two scenarios in which the US and China have totally different roles and powers.
