On 21 June 2005, the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) appointed Hong Kong's top official, Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, new leader of the former British colony. Tsang replaces former shipping magnate Tung Chee-hwa who had resigned under Peking's pressure two years before the end of his term after a series of misjudgements.
