In June 2010 in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh violence erupted, spreading to Jalalabad two days later, with reports of armed gangs, inter-ethnic violence, rape, and stampedes at border crossings into Uzbekistan. The UNHCR has stated that “We have strong indications that this event was not a spontaneous interethnic clash, we have some indications that it was to some degree orchestrated, targeted and well planned.” What were the causes of such violence and what are the likely implications?
