This paper discusses tensions in China-US relations and their implications for Southeast Asia. It examines how China and the US employ naval power to shape the political environment, as well as multilateral efforts to address the issue of the South China Sea. The paper also reviews China-Vietnam interaction in the South China Sea, and the status of the Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and progress by the China-ASEAN working group to implement the Declaration.
