The report “The Political Economy of the Gulf ” examines the rapid changes that have occurred in the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in recent years. According to the authors, the GCC states’ various diversification plans have signaled official acknowledgment of the necessity of changing the ways in which their economies operate and of investing in a future based on the potentials of human capital, rather than relying solely on oil and rents. Explaining the different ways in which globalizing forces have shaped new dimensions to the political economy of the Gulf states, this research initiative proposes to evaluate the changes that have occurred, especially in light of the ongoing global economic crisis.
