Business and development circles are lauding private sector base of the pyramid (BoP) ventures as a dynamic and powerful means of poverty reduction in less developed countries. Using insights from research into consumption patterns, status and well-being this study argues that the BoP literature conceptualizes too narrowly possible development outcomes.
