Russia was once the strongest supporter of North Korea and played the role of a power balancer in the Far East. Security watchers believe that as China’s power rises militarily and economically, Russia too is seeking to leverage its position in the region. The primary aim of Kim’s visit to Russia was to gain Moscow’s support on the nuclear issue and to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
