The article argues that one needs to differentiate between capabilities and intentions when analyzing the Iranian threat. The author contends that the tensions between the West and Iran can be diffused by convincing Iran to moderate its statement from aiming to destroy Israel to vehemently opposing both Israel’s current administration and its politics. He notes that although democratic components in Iran are somewhat limited and underdeveloped, they do exist. Especially the newly created middle class is an important democratic factor in Iran. An open debate that includes such elements could result in this group gaining political influence.
