This paper analyzes relationships between ASEAN members with reference to disputes in the South China Sea and China's territorial claims in the region. The author lists past incidents and disputes as well as coalitions between the different actors in the region. He concludes that because ASEAN is ignored as an arbiter in these disputes, it is thus unable to implement a code of conduct to end the disputes over the sea and its natural resources. The author can only see a resolution to the conflict - threatening to result in a major crisis - in the unity of ASEAN.
