This article presents the four major issues that dominated US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to India from 17 to 21 July 2009. These were 1) India’s future role as a global player; 2) Pakistan’s commitment to fighting terrorism; 3) defense and nuclear energy cooperation; and 4) climate change and caps on carbon emissions. The author concludes that, overall, the visit was significant as a signal of President Obama’s determination to build a broad-based political, economic and strategic relationship with India.
