This essay examines the traditional vulnerability of land transport to terrorism and why it is an "attractive" soft-target for terrorist attacks. The author states that it is not economically or practically realistic to apply the security standards of airports to land transport infrastructure or commuter railway stations. However, intermediate measures such as an increased presence of security personnel and guard dogs, a high level of awareness and courage by transport staff, and heightened vigilance by the public can help create a greater level of security and violence prevention.
