After declaring his candidacy in the 2012 presidential elections, Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced his plans for a 'Eurasian Union' as part of a broader integration process within the CIS region. The author argues that the objective of this statement was not to re-establish the Soviet Union, but rather to create a 'powerful supra-national union' of sovereign states, which stands on equal footing with the USA, China and the major regional organizations.
