This dissertation focuses on the beneficial contribution of formerly displaced persons (FDPs) for development and state (re)construction. It argues that formerly displaced persons have great potential to stimulate development and state renewal. Using a framework called 'returnee capital', the author demonstrates that FDPs not only rebuild their own lives, but also widen socioeconomic structures. The individuals, he argues, therefore deserve to be valued as 'human resources for state building.'
