This brief discusses the chances that India will test a nuclear weapon in the coming years and possible implications for the Indo-US civil-nuclear deal. The author looks at factors which determine the US response: the preferences of US leaders, domestic lobbying and geopolitical balance of power considerations. Finally she examines the potential effect of the US response on India.
