The new Working Mechanism on Border Affairs which India and China have set up is designed to ensure that their disputed boundary will be a zone of peace and tranquility. This paper looks at whether China and India can muster the political will to resolve the basic border dispute itself. For now, the author argues, the imperative of shared political will remains elusive.
