This paper looks at how Somali women have adapted to an unfamiliar, urban environment on the South Acton Estate in West London, UK. The paper considers various aspects of the ‘material’ urban environment including housing, pollution, and health, alongside its effects on social relations, culture, and women’s access to urban space. It finds that the women have found settling in and adapting to the estate environment difficult. It the suggests that the adaptation process can be eased by understanding and working around cultural and language barriers.
