This brief offers an assessment of the insurgencies in the Indian regions of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland in 2009. The author argues that the arrest of the leaders of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) in December 2009 could finally end the separatist group's 30-year insurgency. The prospects of peace in Nagaland were also boosted in 2009 by the signing of a 'reconciliation' deal between rival armed groups. Manipur, however, continued to be plagued by insurgencies, although it could be argued that peace in Assam and Nagaland could have a 'domino-effect' in the conflict-ridden state.
