This paper assesses whether the achievements of smallholders in Asia during the green revolution, can be replicated by smallholders in Africa. It argues that, given complementary actions, agricultural development based on small farms will reduce poverty and hunger in Africa as more food availability is likely to push down food prices, while increased incomes for the poor are likely to mean greater access to food.
