This note provides a brief summary of the less-lethal weapons (LLWs) commonly used by law enforcement agencies and charts some of the technical developments in the field. Although there is a lack of consensus over the precise meaning of the term, in this article LLW refers to weapons used in conjunction with non-lethal law enforcement techniques, such as electroshock devices (such as the TASER) or flexible baton rounds, which include bean-bag projectiles and rubber bullets.
