The article examines IT coverage on the internet. It argues that even though information technologies are still considered to have an increasing impact on society as a whole, German media relate information technology to companies only. Information technologies coverage in the context of political and societal developments in Germany was almost absent. It concludes that technological development engenders many opportunities, which are squandered if those responsible for societal development are not sensitized. It concerns and affects companies, politicians and citizens alike. The media have an important role in informing the public of opportunities and risks associated with IT.
