This piece summarizes trends in US media coverage following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center radically altered the way Americans view their role in the world. Entrenched assumptions on a host of issues, ranging from global interdependence and immigration reform to intercultural understanding, were all open to change. The author asks how a public that has become increasingly introspective since the end of the Cold War could suddenly become receptive to the idea of supporting two major wars.
