This piece summarizes trends in US media coverage of economic policy during the 2004 election campaign. Throughout the first half of 2004, media coverage of the economic situation shaped public opinion with regard to the economic competence of President Bush and the potential competence of his challenger John Kerry. The article argues that despite some positive developments in the economy, the news remained primarily bleak.
