This paper highlights the highly volatile nature of politics in the Maldives. Indeed, since its independence in 1965, the country has suffered through one-party rule, several military coups and dubious attempts at democratization. Whether the 2013 elections will improve the future stability of this island nation is an open question, especially given the growing political influence of Islamists.
