This paper examines how Washington and Beijing are likely to work together as the leadership in China changes. It will matter a great deal for Asia and South Asia as to how relations between the United States and China evolve over the next decade, the period during which Xi is likely to lead his country. It would help South Asia enormously if this shift in policy stance adds to the economic strength of the Pacific region. It would hurt if the move produces even greater tension between the two superpowers.
