The episodes of political violence in the MENA and West Africa regions have drawn attention to the role that natural resources can play in the eruption of conflicts. The author argues that the strong link of political natural resources has been somewhat overlooked in the security and peacebuilding communities. He explains why natural resources can channel violence and states that natural resource governance provides entry points for external assistance in the transition to peace and development.
