This brief discusses India's struggle against left-wing Maoist extremism. Although between 2009-2011, extremist violence as well as areas under extremist influence have somewhat diminished, the problem remains serious and has been described as the "biggest internal security challenge". The author analyzes the different responses to the problem - the military and the development approach - and provides policy recommendations.
