This briefing discusses the presidential and parliamentary elections in Haiti that are to be held at the end of 2005. It also summarizes the developments that have led to the postponement of the election. Even though the authors acknowledge that a further delay would have negative consequences with an already disillusioned public, they argue that a delay until March 2006 is necessary to ensure credible and internationally monitored elections, and an effective election campaign. The report also provides information on the candidates contesting the presidential election.
