This paper examines the recent phenomenon of non-state security providers in Kyrgyzstan. It focuses on druzhina (voluntary people’s patrol), examines its evolution, activities and its role in Kyrgyzstani society. The paper contends that druzhina represents a state-civil society nexus and, as such, could be of interest with regard to security sector reform.
