This paper discusses the current state of NGOs in Kyrgyzstan. Notwithstanding the fact that Kyrgyzstan is a country with the most vibrant NGO sector in Central Asia, the author shows that there are three main challenges that Kyrgyz NGOs encounter. The first challenge is that NGOs lack sustainability. In addition, state and private sector support of NGOs has been weak due to insufficient experience in dealing with the sector. Furthermore, the author highlights the fact that there is no legislation conducive to effective collaboration between NGOs, the state and the private sector and that few NGOs have extensive membership.
