This paper discusses how Kyrgyzstani students and their parents perceive the desirability or need for university education. The exploratory study is conducted in the context of a rising university enrollment rate without economic demand for highly skilled workers. The authors find that that higher education in Kyrgyzstan is often valued outside of its potential for the job market. Students work towards higher education as a goal unto itself.
