This policy brief discusses India's difficulties in complying with the sanctions imposed on Iran by the US and the EU. Although New Delhi's official position states that it would only comply with UN-mandated sanctions and not unilaterally imposed ones, India has, nevertheless, cut its oil imports from Iran, in compliance with US sanctions. India also needs to address the EU ban on insurance cover for tankers carrying Iranian crude oil and find innovative means to continue trading with Iran, an important source of energy.
