The policy brief discusses the first elections held in post-Mubarak Egypt. In the second round of the elections, Egyptians are faced with a choice between Islamists and a symbol of the former regime and military establishment. The author notes that while the election is important in the consolidation of Egypt’s fledgling democracy, the campaign season has stolen the spotlight from an equally important process: the drafting of a new constitution to institutionalize and protect the freedoms envisioned by protesters in Tahrir Square.
