This commentary argues that the political constellations which have formed in the wake of the fall of the Mubarak regime could spell disaster for Egypt. The only organized political opposition is the theocratically minded Muslim Brotherhood. Other secular political groups were incapable of forming parties with popular appeal and were thus in no position to win over the country’s military, which the author describes as "the only real political power in Egypt". The author concludes that unless the Egyptian military agree to relinquish power or something dramatic happens to change the nature of politics, the Egyptian people will be left with a stultified, conservative base, which promises nothing.
