This paper examines the effect of the war in South Sudan on people’s lives, livelihoods and access to basic services, and outlines the country's challenges in overcoming these. Factors impinging on livelihood recovery in the world’s newest country range from rapid urbanization, a major post-war influx of foreigners and the limited capacity of the South Sudanese government, to issues of land dispute resolution and oil supply. The fact that livelihood recovery initiatives and social protection programs are underway but have largely not taken off makes apparent the need for further investigation into the nature of return and reintegration.
