After almost two decades of war and insecurity in the DRC, basic services including health care, education, transport, water and sanitation are fragile and insufficient. This paper takes a critical look at livelihoods and the delivery of basic services and social protection interventions in the country, with special emphasis on the eastern provinces. The aim of the paper is to help pinpoint strategic opportunities for future research on how best to promote improvements in the quality of life for the conflict-affected population of the DRC.
