This paper explores the relationship between Kyrgyzstan and China from the perspective of the Kyrgyz. The author argues that while China is the dominant player in many aspects of the relationship, it is nonetheless important to understand how China is perceived within Kyrgyzstan and how these views affect the relationship. The paper shows, that Kyrgyz views are primarily influenced by the economic aspects, Kyrgyzstan’s relationship with other major powers, as well as Kyrgyz nationalism and how the Kyrgyz view themselves. These three categories are often times contradictory, as many Kyrgyz expressed positive views of trade with China while simultaneously expressing distrust and suspicion towards the Chinese.
