This paper starts from the fact that the Soviet Communist ideology regarded religion as an evil social and economic force that benefited the exploiting classes. It then analyzes historically the ‘surprising’ active interest that the Soviet Communist Party, and with it the Soviet government, took in Islam. The paper concludes that there is plenty of historical justification and precedent for the unlikely, implicit cooperation between the Soviet party-state and the Muslims of Central Asia.
