In this brief, the author explores potential scenarios in which rising tensions between the US and Iran could affect the price of oil. The scenarios discussed include complete sanctions on Iran's exports, a US or Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, a blockade of gulf production and shipping, and a regional conflict including a temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz. To conclude, the brief proposes policy options for the case of a major, prolonged oil supply disruption.
