This paper discusses the concept of "desistance" with regard to gang membership. In criminology, the term desistance refers to a situation where a person with a criminal history refrains from committing further offences. This paper investigates the causes and motivations for desisting from gang crime, and puts special emphasis on the role social media and the internet play in the process. The authors include some recommendations on how desistance processes can be supported.
