This paper offers an account of the Forum Betawi Rempug (FBR), a Jakarta-based ethnic-cultural solidarity movement that campaigns for the political and economic rights of the Betawi people of West Java. The FBR has been applying pressure on many of the political parties in the country to recognize the plight of the Betawi and to accept their demands for better representation at the local level and more access to jobs, housing and education. It has called upon the Betawi to gather together under the banner of a mass movement that represents their interests at both a local and national level.
