This paper examines the Asian security architecture and its implications for the US role in Asia. The author states that while the first East Asian Summit (EAS) and the emergence of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) prompted many strategists to argue that American power is waning in Asia, the US is merely reverting to its traditional role as an "offshore balancer" in Asia, and is reacting to the rise of China by strengthening its ties with China's Asian rivals, particularly Japan and India.
