This paper discusses the security situation in Afghanistan four years after the downfall of the Taliban regime. It argues that security remains a major concern in the country, as extremist factions continue to regroup and carry out terrorist attacks. The author examines the re-emergence of the Taliban, and discusses their ability to coordinate tactically challenging attacks, including the use of improvised explosive devices, suicide bombings, and beheadings. He concludes that because the stability of Afghanistan is crucial for the Middle East as a whole, the international community should establish more institutions that monitor and analyze the changing threat in the country.
