This paper begins by comparing a statement issued by the G7 last year on the tensions in the China Seas with a more pugnacious one made by the group in 2016. The text’s author then 1) provides a brief outline of the historical Maritime Silk Road and its 21st century renaissance; 2) the frictions arising from China's growing influence in Asia; and 3) provides twelve recommendations on how to diffuse the tensions and mistrust that are attributable to the sea-based Silk Road initiative.
