The commentary discuses the challenges posed by Middle Eastern Maritime chokepoints. Maritime chokepoints are sensitive locations where geography, trade, and politics meet. The authors argue that especially the Middle Eastern chokepoints have become increasingly volatile in recent years, and especially since the Arab uprisings began. Complications include increased regional instability and aggravation of existing threats, preeminently piracy, terrorism, and the challenges posed by Iran.
