The year 2011 may well be remembered as moment in which societies across the Middle East and North Africa "kicked back" after decades of unbridled domination by authoritarian state structures. But the verdict is still very much out, and already one can say that those who were in the vanguard of the protests have been replaced by a variety of groups, most important of which are Islamist movements.
