The commentary discusses shifts in military doctrine and strategy in the light of ten years of international engagement in Afghanistan. The author argues that enabling other governments to provide security for their people has become a contemporary feature of US national security. This shift from combat operations to security force assistance should be evaluated. Furthermore, countries should work together to consider the implications for the size, shape, scope, and doctrine of future forces to enable partners through security assistance to eliminate security deficits that threaten international peace and security.
