In July 2012, a massive power outage affected three electricity grids covering the north, east and north-east regions in India. The author examines the reasons behind this outage. He looks at the power scarcity in the country, the poor financial conditions of the state electricity utilities, and the governance and administration of these institutions as possible contributing factors.
