The author of this paper argues that India can significantly tilt Asia’s balance of power in its favor if it aligns its maritime interests with those of the United States. If it dithers over strengthening this partnership, primarily as a result of its obsession with strategic autonomy, it runs the risk of losing geopolitical influence in the emerging 'Asian Century'. In turn, US military planners can ill afford to ignore the growing geopolitical significance of the Indian Ocean and the role New Delhi might play in fulfilling their objectives there.
