This paper is about Malaysia’s policy towards the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the post-Cold War era.The author first develops neoclassical realist framework to explain Malaysia's post-Cold War China policy and then describes the consistent elements of Malaysia's China policy under Mahathir. Further, he analyzes the enduring continuity in Malaysia’s China policy under Abdullah and Najib. The conclusions sum up the key findings by analyzing how Malaysia’s hedging approach vis-à-vis China is a product of the interplay between structural factors and domestic determinants.
